Are you a perfectionist? If so, you may actually be keeping yourself from making money online!

Perfectionists are typically so concerned with being "wrong," or making errors, that they waste huge amounts of time obsessing over tiny details that, in the long run, aren't that important.

But the good news is that, if YOU happen to be a perfectionist, it doesn't mean you can't be successful online! Here are five strategies you can use to overcome your perfectionist impulses, and become a more balanced (and happy) achiever...

Strategy #1: Be realistic about what you can achieve


Many perfectionists set themselves impossible deadlines, or take on tasks they can't reasonably hope to complete on their own.

Then, when they inevitably fail, they beat themselves up for not being perfect, which just makes them procrastinate, or be even MORE obsessive with the next task.

So take a long, hard look at what you want to accomplish during any given day. Ask yourself if your goal is reasonable and realistic. Is it something somebody else would be able to accomplish?

If the answer is no, then break the goal into smaller "chunks," and focus on completing one small piece at a time.

Strategy #2: Set strict time limits for each of your projects

A great technique for heading off the endless wasted hours working on trivial things is to give yourself a limited amount of time to complete any given task.

Decide how much you want to spend on a certain project, and then stick to those limits. Be firm!

This will keep you from burning up an entire day hunting for that "perfect" image you want to add to your site, when you could have been doing something with that time to complete tasks that would add considerably more value to your business.

Strategy #3: Think of failure as a learning experience

It's inevitable: some of the things you try with your site simply won't work!

So instead of thinking about a salesletter that didn't convert the way you wanted it to as a sign that you're a failure at writing salescopy, look at the "failed" letter as the perfect opportunity to understand your market better.

By evaluating why the letter didn't work, you'll gain a better understanding of your audience, which will help you in many other aspects of your business as well.

Strategy #4: Celebrate your successes

When you're a perfectionist, it's easy to focus on the fact that you haven't yet achieved some of the goals you set for yourself, which can feed into your fear of failure.

So, rather than taking a negative view of what's not done yet, take some time to look at all of the smaller things that you have accomplished while working toward your goals.

Remember that it's not just the end goal that matters. The smaller milestones you complete along the way are successes in themselves.

Strategy #5: Don't be afraid to admit you need help

YOU are the only person who expects you to have all the answers!

Taking advice and direction for your Internet business from people who have already figured it out, is a huge advantage, and not a sign that you're a failure!

Six ways to find more time to work on your business

Planning to start an Internet business, but not sure you'll be able to find the "spare" time to make real progress?

It's a common complaint....

When you're already doing everything you can to keep your head above water -- but an ever-growing "to-do" list keeps dragging you down -- the idea of taking on a massive new project can seem pretty daunting (even when you know the rewards of completing that project will be HUGE.)

However, no matter HOW busy you are, you can always squeeze more hours out of your day. You just have to know where to find those hidden hours -- and then make the best possible use of them!

Here are 6 "time-finder" tips that will help you cross those items off your "to-do" list as quickly and efficiently as possible, so you can devote more time on the work that really matters...

Time-finder tip #1: Turn off your email!

Email is a HUGE distraction. Every time you hear that little "ding" that announces a new email, it interrupts your thoughts and makes it harder to get back into the same productive mindset.

Set yourself specific times to check your email and respond to it (if ABSOLUTELY necessary -- otherwise, ignore it), like at 9:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., and then at 5:00 p.m., just before I leave work. That way, you don't have to deal with endless distractions during the day.

And I if someone who emails you REALLY wants to get in touch ASAP, they can always pick up the phone and call!

Time-finder tip #2: Set yourself scheduled "surfing" times

Internet browsing is right up there with email as a major source of distraction. It's all too easy to get sucked into reading your favorite blogs or news sites -- and then discover that almost an hour has passed, and you have nothing to show for it!

If you enjoy surfing a bit too much for your own good, set yourself scheduled browsing times. For example, for every two hours of hard work you do, reward yourself with 10 minutes of random "pleasure" surfing.

Just make sure you don't go over your allotted time! Set an alarm if you have to, so you can get back to your work when your time is up.

Time-finder tip #3: Cut your lunch time in half

If you get an hour off for lunch, use 30 minutes of that time to work on your website. Half an hour might not seem like much, but it's amazing what you can get done in that time if you really focus on it.

... Also, if you don't already do this, try to bring your own lunch to work so you don't have to waste valuable time going out to buy it. Plus, you'll also save money that way!

Time-finder tip #4: Use your "slack time" wisely
By "slack time," we mean those periods of time during a day where you're stuck doing nothing -- such as when you're commuting on a bus or train, or waiting in line at a bank machine.

Bring along some training materials to read wherever you go, so you can use that "slack time" to brush up on your learning and put the time you spend in front of a computer to better use.

... You should also bring a notepad and pen with you wherever you go, so you can jot down any good ideas you might have (for example, ideas for niche markets or keywords to research).

Time-finder tip #5: Prioritize your tasks

Even though all the tasks on your "to-do" list may seem like they're all high-priority items that need to be done ASAP, chances are some tasks are truly more important than others.

Before you begin work each day -- whether it's for your "day" job or your website -- write a list of everything you have to accomplish that day, then prioritize the items on the list according to how important they REALLY are.

Next, rewrite the list so the absolute MOST important tasks are at the top of the list, with the least essential ones towards the bottom. That way, you're guaranteed to get your most important tasks out of the way first.

... And if there are any tasks on the list that don't REALLY need to be done, then consider crossing them off the list altogether!

The last thing you need to be involved in are silly "make work" tasks that don't really benefit anyone. Your time would be better spent working ahead on the important projects that really DO need to get done right away.

That way, you can free up even MORE of your time to devote on your website!

Time-finder tip #6: Go on a "TV diet"

Many people like to come home from work and "decompress" with a little time in front of the TV.

... Well, as you probably know, TV is one of the biggest time wasters there is -- so even if you think that an evening of TV is helping you relax, all it's really doing is stealing valuable time from you -- time that would be better spent working on your website!

Allow yourself one hour of TV watching MAXIMUM each day. Pick your favorite show each day and pre-record it, if you can. (Tivo is one of the great tech inventions). That way, you can fast-forward through the commercials and earn yourself an extra 15 minutes that otherwise would be wasted.
Then, when your site is finished, you can reward yourself with a free weekend in which to catch up on all your favorite shows!

They might seem pretty simple, but if you follow them faithfully, you'll be amazed at how much more time you'll have to spend on growing your website.

There are the usual ways to make money from off-line local businesses, the most common being SEO, and that is how I started my small business advisory site, trying to get my client on to the first page of the search engines. However, there were two major problems. The first one was that I could ethically only serve one type of business at a time. As an example, I tried to get the search term “Canberra restaurant” to the top position, but since there can only ever be one business in first place I couldn't tell the other restaurants that I could get them there as well. Someone would have to be number two and number three etc. The other problem I had was that there was just too much work involved, too much writing articles, commenting on blogs, and submission to various social media websites.

So here are two other things you can do.

1.       You could offer to write articles for the business. If you are already writing articles and offering your service over the Internet, you would be lucky to get five dollars per article, but if you offered that same article specifically tailored to a local business you can charge $25 or more. Then you can outsource the actual writing to one of those people who does it for five dollars, making a nice little profit of $20 per article. Once you have explained to the business the benefits of getting articles written about them, such as back link promotion, and SEO, they might ask you to do five or ten articles a month. On your outsourcing profit setup that could mean an income of $100-$200 for basically doing nothing other than liaising with your outsourcer.

2.       You could offer to set up and write a blog for a local business. These days a blog is super easy to set up, using a service like WordPress. From this basic offer you could expand your services by telling the business that to have a blog they would need to register a domain name and arrange hosting, and of course you would tell them that you would do all this for them (for a price.) The domain name would have to be very specific to the business, something like “ Joe’spizzaCanberra.com because you will know that this domain name will almost certainly be available. You can tell the business that by having a blog instead of a website they can have some interaction with their customers by allowing them to post comments. Then you could point out that a blog needs continually updating, and then you would revert back to the first point, being writing articles for them. You can charge them a mere hundred dollars a week for everything, and by getting half a dozen businesses on board you could be earning $2000 a month or more. Remember that although this seems like a lot of work, you will be outsourcing the lot, and shouldn't really have to do much at all.

Of course you may be thinking that all this is very well, but you have to get your customers first, and I'm afraid there is no easy way around that. You will either have to pluck up courage and cold call them, or physically go in and see them. If you really feel you can’t do either of those things you will have to hire a competent salesperson to do it for you on a pure commission basis

The lifeblood of any Internet business is to get traffic to a website: as Internet marketing is all a matter of numbers, and the more numbers you get to your site theoretically the more sales you will get. These days, consumers want a lot more for their money, and what used to cost $27 will now only command a price of about nine dollars, and no marketer worth his salt will bother with a product at that price.
Therefore you have to build a substantial profit which can support a higher price, which means you not only have to give an e-book, but probably supply videos, transcripts and graphics to give the appearance of providing good value.
I would suggest that if all you have is an e-book you should just give it away, because the value to you is not the e-book itself, it's the links to your web page and affiliate sales pages that are going to give you the leverage you need to take full advantage of viral marketing.

A variation of this is to set up an affiliate program and get other people to do your selling for you. However, keep in mind that the vast majority of affiliates never sell anything. Also remember that you have no control over who your affiliates sell to, and you may have to prepare yourself for some refunds.
A final method of getting viral traffic is to participate in traffic exchange services. I know these have had a bad press, but on the other hand I know several people who have done quite well from traffic exchange programs.
I hope these tips have been useful to you as it is obviously much better to get other people selling your product rather than trying to do it on your own.

How to make sure that perfect "opportunity" isn't a scam

We routinely get letters from subscribers telling us similar stories: they spent several thousand dollars purchasing an affiliate website, and so far have made a grand total of zero!

The reality is that there are a lot of shady companies out there who are happy to take your money in exchange for a website that just doesn't work. Or they'll try to make you pay for the privilege of promoting their products... knowing full well the market for those products is completely saturated.

So when you're starting out online, your main challenge is to learn as soon as possible how to identify a profitable online business opportunity -- and how to recognize the ones that are borderline scams whose only purpose is to line someone else's pockets with your hard-earned money.

To help you with that, today we'd like to share our top seven questions you need to ask when evaluating a possible online business opportunity, so you can determine whether the opportunity is going to make you good money or drain your bank account and leave you with nothing to show for it.

Question #1: Does the opportunity involve you creating your own unique website -- or using a cookie-cutter template website provided by an affiliate company?

We always urge our customers to create their own unique website instead of using a cookie-cutter template provided by an affiliate company.

Because if the company is giving you a ready-made website complete with products to sell, chances are there are hundreds or even thousands of people using the exact same website to sell the exact same product. How much money do you think you can generate when you're going up against that kind of competition?

Question #2: If it's an affiliate opportunity, is the company making you PAY to promote it?

Ask yourself this: If a company is making a product that millions of people are going to want to buy, why wouldn't they simply sell it themselves -- instead of making other people pay for the opportunity to sell it for them?

The truth is, companies like this KNOW their "affiliates" aren't going to generate any sales. That's why they need to get your money up front.

Take it from a company that has been running a highly successful affiliate program for years. If someone wants to become an IMC affiliate and sell our products for us, we would never make them pay. Why should they? They're doing us a favor! Question #3: If there's a product involved, do you know if there's actually a MARKET for it?

Are you positive you're selling a product or solution people are actively looking to buy online -- and not easily finding? That is the formula for a successful business.

The best way to discover if there is a demand for your product is to do keyword research with a tool like the Google Analytics Keyword Tool. The keywords will tell you if a decent number of people are actively seeking a solution for the problem your product addresses.

If your keyword research shows there isn't any demand for the product online, then drop this business idea immediately. Because if there isn't any demand for your product online, how will you ever be able to find anyone to sell it to?

Question: #4: What kind of competition are you going up against?

After you've done your keyword research to discover the phrases people are using to describe the problem that your product solves, type those keywords into Google to see what kind of competition you'll be facing should you choose to build a business targeting those keywords.

If millions of sites appear in the search results, and the top 10-20 results are filled with sites that do a great job of providing information and products that will solve the problem represented by the keywords, then you are going to find it VERY hard to break into this market. Our advice is: abandon ship!

Question #5: Can you come up with a unique USP to offer your customers?

It's extremely rare to find a market that has absolutely NO competition, so chances are good that when you try to break into that market, you're going to find yourself going up against some businesses that have been there for a while. How do you compete against older, more established businesses and survive?

Simple: you offer something they don't have. You make your prices lower or add more value to the product -- whatever makes you stand out from your competitors and makes your audience notice you.

If there is nothing you can offer the market that isn't already available online, then your business has very little chance of succeeding. Question #6: Can the company prove a successful track record?

If you've never heard of the company before -- and they can't offer solid proof they've got a successful track record -- then how can you trust them to help YOU make money?

Give them a call and talk to them in person. Be skeptical. Ask them hard questions. If they say they're a successful company, ask for proof. And if you feel like you're getting stonewalled in any way, then don't do business with them.

Question #7: What do former customers/affiliates say about the opportunity?

A little bit of research goes a long way when you're starting an Internet business. Try typing "the name of the program + scam" or "the name of the program + customer review" into Google and see what results you get. If the majority of the results are from former customers saying the product is a scam or a waste of money, then whatever you do, don't make the same mistake THEY did.

1. You don't make people feel safe when they order.
Remind people that they are ordering through a secure
server. Tell them you won't sell their e-mail address
and all their information will be kept confidential.
2. You don't make your ad copy attractive. Your ad
lists features instead of benefits. The headline does
not attract at your target audience. You don't list any
testimonials or guarantees included in your ad.
3. You don't remind people to come back and visit.
People usually don't purchase the first time they visit.
The more times they visit your site, the greater the
chance they will buy. The most effective way is to give
them a free subscription to your e-zine.
4. You don't let people know anything about your
business. They will feel more comfortable if they know
who they are buying from. Publish a section called
"About Us" on your web site. Include your business
history, profile of employees, contact information etc.
5. You don't give people as many ordering options as
possible. Accept credit cards, checks, money orders,
and other forms of electronic payments. Take orders

The most important elements of your website

Thinking of creating your own website?

You don't need to be an expert to build an effective sales website, but you DO need to understand some of the most important elements of a successful site.

The first fold (the part that's visible without scrolling) is literally the most valuable real estate on your website. This is the screen that your visitors absorb during the first few seconds of their visit and use to make their "should I stay or should I go" decision.

The first fold of your website needs to be strategically designed so that it clearly communicates the biggest, most compelling benefit you have to offer your visitors. Here are the key elements you must include in the first fold of your homepage...

1. The headline

The very first thing that should draw the eyes of your visitors when they arrive at your website is a headline that clearly states the biggest benefit your site has to offer. Graphics, logos, illustrations, menus, links, and other elements should never overpower or distract from this critical element.

Your headline should be located at the very top center of the page in a larger font size that naturally attracts attention. It should communicate information about what you offer and how you're going to:
  • Make visitors' lives easier
  • Save them money
  • Save them time
  • Help them in their personal lives
  • Provide additional income
  • Entertain them
  • Make them more attractive
  • Help them feel better
  • Etc.
Plus, it should be visually appealing. For your headline to be most effective, your visitors must be able to absorb the benefits it shares in a glance. So you not only need to write a great headline, you need to strategically format it!

Use bolding, italics, and highlighting to tastefully emphasize key points. And watch where your lines break.

2. The opt-in offer

Given that so many of your first-time visitors will leave your site without buying anything, it is crucial that you ask for their names and email addresses as soon as possible. If you bury your opt-in offer on a second page, you'll lose potential subscribers who don't make it that far into your site.

3. The navigation

Visitors should be able to see your main navigation as soon as the page loads. If they have to scroll or search for it, you'll lose the majority of your visitors.

4. Call to action

Don't leave it to your navigation to direct the visitor; after all, they'll only click on a link if it is what they're looking for. You must give your visitors a strong call to action and tell them what you want them to do.

Let's say you sell a stress-relief product. Your copy might say something like:
"After doing extensive research and testing, I found a set of really fabulous relaxation tapes that solved my recurring migraine problems, improved my sleep, and increased my energy levels -- in just a few days! Click here now to learn how they can soothe your troubles away and lead to a healthier, happier life."
For a site selling multiple products, a link that says "products" is far less compelling than a link like this: "Click here now to find the best tool for the job."

For a service business, a link that says "About Us" is informative, but doesn't give the reader a good reason why they should care. A call to action like "Click here now to discover why over 20,000 business owners trust us" will be much more effective!

Focus on these four critical elements while building your website, and you'll have a site that will turn the highest percentage of your visitors into buyers.

a fact, people like to win things. If you can fulfill that
need, people will stop by to visit.
4. You don't offer a free directory. Create a directory
of web sites on a particular topic that is related to your
target audience. People will visit because they will find
what they're looking for, all in one place.
5. You don't offer a free e-zine. Most people love to
get free information that they're interested in emailed
to them on a regular basis. This saves them time and
money.
6. You don't offer a free community. People like to
have a place were they can have discussions with
others on a particular subject. You could add a chat
room or message board to your web site.
7. You don't offer a free affiliate program. One of
people's basic needs to survive is money. When you
offer them a free opportunity to make money they'll
line up to visit your web site.
8. You don't offer a free online utility. When you offer
a utility that can solve a problem, people will visit your
web site. The utility could be a free autoresponder,
e-mail account, search engine submission, etc.
9. You don't offer free current information. Supply
news stories related to your web site. People want
up-to-date news on the topics they are interested in.
They will also be interested in visiting your web site.
10. You don't offer free samples of your product
or service. Have you ever been to a store and you
jumped at the chance to get a free sample of food?
This same concept will also attract people to visit
your web site.
